Sprout Creek Farm is a center for education, farming, community building and spiritual growth. It is a place of work, of peace, intellectual inquiry and experiential learning. It is home to a community of people, plants and animals; farmland, forest, streams and ponds, of wetlands and hedgegrows, hills and rocky soils. They are a productive farm where we make cheese from the milk produced by our cows and goats.

Their cheeses are made from the nutritious and creamy (antibiotic and hormone free) milk of our small herds of cows and goats that roam the pastures eating what they're supposed to eat – grass. Cheeses aged over 60 days are made with raw milk – bigger flavor and very nutritious. Those tender and fresh cheeses aged less than 60 days are made with pasteurized milk. The operative word here is GRASS, however.Milk from animals that eat what they were designed to eat is nutrient rich, low in cholesterol, high in Omega 3s, and still retains proteins, minerals and vitamins necessary for good health. From the much loved pastured animals to the cheeses lovingly crafted and aged, you are sure to "Taste the Difference a Little Grass Makes".

Special Cooking Program for 2010 ~ Open Flyer

“Get ready for another season of fresh vegetables and specialty foods when the Ellenville Farmers’ Market on Market Street re-opens Sunday, June 2oth” said Mike Siegel, Market Director. “This is the fourth year for the farmers’ market, and we’re really excited by its growth and development.

Our popular vendors from last year are returning, and we are happy to be welcoming some great new vendors, too.” Look for some old friends at the Burd’s Farm booths, along with Cohen’s Bakery and Panzerella’s Specialty Foods.

Vendors include Rondout Valley Organics, a cooperative of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) based farms in the Rondout Valley, and Gaby’s, featuring homemade guacamole to order and fruit smoothies, too. We’ll also have monthly visits by Master Gardeners from Cornell Cooperative Extension. The gazebo built in the famous Mohonk style will serve as a band shell for musical performances, and there will be special guest exhibitors throughout the summer, too.

This year, Operation Frontline will be holding free cooking classes for kids ages 8-12, beginning July 11^th through August 15^th,11am -1pm. Operation Frontline is a program of Share Our Strength, funded in part by ConAgra Foods and brought to Ellenville Farmers’ Market by the Queen’s Galley in Kingston.

I love corn & scallops, it makes me think of summer. SO this last week I bought some super sweet corn from Saunderskill Farm at the Ellenville Farmers Market. I ate about 5 ears of raw corn before they made in into the Aroma Thyme Kitchen.

Tips for roasting corn:
Husk and coat with sunflower oil and cook slow on a grill.
Or roast in an oven with the husk on.

Cut corn off of ears and enjoy in a salsa, salad or by itself.

This week I picked even more veggies than the week before for Aroma Thyme Bistro. Everyone loved the purple cauliflower from Burd's Farm.

It must be a good sign... the incessant rain of almost biblical proportions (to quote a Rondout Valley Organics customer) took a break today, for the season opener of the Ellenville Farmers Market. Ponchos were shed and folks strolled and chatted and enjoyed the bounty of our local producers. Miss Susan from the Ellenville Public Library & Museum signed kids up for the summer reading program, while Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners shared their wisdom. So nice to hang out and meet up with neighbors & friends! Julianna, Paul and Danylo liked the added treat of book-browsing and buying at the Hunt Memorial Building down the street.
Here at Rusty Plough Farm, fields are still soppy and muddy. Only the weeds and the ducks are enjoying this, while our veggies sit tight and wait for the sun in order to grow. The weeds know they're ahead, since we can't cultivate in all that mud. The now-preteen seedlings in the greenhouse get leggy and awkward, as they await the space to spread their roots and wings in the fields. Until next week...

The rain took a break for opening day at the Farmers Market. It has rained for the last week and the forecast is calling for another week on rain. So I was pleased to go to the market without an umbrella. Instead I gave the kids cameras and we headed the block over.

The farmer's market has been the best addition to downtown Ellenville for me. I can go every Sunday and stock up on fresh produce for the restaurant. And the fresh produce was looking great. I unsure of what to buy first. So here is the rundown of what I took back to Aroma Thyme:
Chard, Yellow Zucchini, Red Leaf Lettuce, Snow Peas, Snap Peas, Bok Choi, tomato plants & Basil plants. I plan on planting the garden this week at the restaurant.

Ellenville Farmer's Market 2009 Opening Coming Soon

Thanks to Marcus for inviting Ellenville Farmer's Market Participants to contribute to this blog. Asha Gohlier, Iris Freidman and I are going into our third year of operating the Market and find ourselves excited at the coming opening day. This year our stalwarts Panzarella's, Saunderskill Farms, Burd Farms, Rondout Valley Organics, and Cohen's Bakery return and we have a new vendor, Gabby's, who will be serving up homemade ice cream, guacamole, and nachos to customers at our beautiful Farmer's Market green. I know it seems that things are just warming up but we have been putting in a lot of time at our farm already this year - the asparagus season is just about ending and our strawberries have been producing for the past two weeks and should still be producing fruit when the farmer's market opens.

Red, lucious, juicy strawberries are a real treat under ordinary circumstances - but when freshly picked and untreated - they generally have outstanding taste. We eat 'em plain, we eat 'em with vanilla ice cream, and we eat 'em with plain and vanilla yogurt. Our greens are coming on strong, pea shoots, kale, chards and lettuces are all happily shooting up right now. Our tomato plants are already blooming, and our calendula, nasturtiums, garlic, shallots and onions are looking very vibrant and healthy. Already planted and waiting to sprout are sunflowers, potatoes, heirloom beets, carrots, corn, melons, and winter squash.
This year we have planted a small dwarf tree orchard with peaches, cherries, apricots and apples.
Our chickens are laying eggs with a fury right now and their yokes are a deep golden yellow.
We can't wait to share them with you!

Saunderskill Farms at the Ellenville Farmers Market

I look forward every week to the Ellenville Farmers Market. Saunderskill is one of the reasons why. I usually stock up on my local produce from them for Aroma Thyme Bistro. I love their tomatoes, green beans and berries.

The history of Saunderskill Farms (named for the tributary of the Rondout Creek that flows through it) is as rich as the soil that has supported it for 12 generations. Originally granted to Lieutenant Hendrick J. Schoonmaker by Peter Stuyvesant in 1663 as payment for military service, the family's original 300 acres of prime Rondout bottomland has been continuously farmed since 1680.

Second in age only to the Hull family farm in Southhold, Long Island, Saunderskill Farm now includes more than 800 acres of vegetables, flowers and orchards. The stone manor house, built in 1787, still stands on the property, as does the barn that housed oxen used to pull barges on the Delaware & Hudson Canal, a section of which meanders through the property. Saunderskill is one of the few farms in the nation to have received the rare Tricentennial Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
